Cycle touring is one of the most suitable sports for discovering the thousand faces of Abruzzo, a unicum of heterogeneous environments and landscapes that pamper and excite the visitor who takes a trip to our region. The routes, of varying difficulty and length, are suitable both for those who enjoy cycling through plains and hills and for the cyclist who is always on the lookout for new routes for more demanding challenges.
Almost all of the proposed routes start from towns and villages, where it is also possible to find tourist information on buses if you only want to ride a section of the route. The various stages of each itinerary (tour) can be reached within the same day or, alternatively, over several days should one wish to stay in the characteristic historical centres.

A long cycle path for everyone
An extraordinary cycle and pedestrian route along the entire Abruzzo coast. 131 kilometres mainly along the Adriatic coast, from Martinsicuro to San Salvo.
The Ciclovia, which is actually a cycle-pedestrian route and can therefore be travelled on foot or alternating between cycling and walking, allows you to experience the dual soul of Abruzzo.
On the one hand, you pedal with a view of the Adriatic Sea, with stretches of natural coastline and the possibility, in fine weather, of stopping at some beach or hidden cove. On the other, the route built along disused railway lines allows numerous detours inland to get to know and explore the hinterland, made up of ancient villages and unique food and wine traditions.

What we recommend is a circular route departing from Villaggio Lido D’Abruzzo to be completed in one day. Along the Adriatic cycle path, turn right after the cycle bridge to continue along a dirt road up the Vomano river. At Fontanelle, continue along the SP 553 for about 10 kilometres (elevation gain of 340 metres) to the beautiful town of Atri, where you can visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, in Piazza Duomo, one of the most important examples of Abruzzo Gothic architecture. Also in Piazza Duomo, the round-arched portico of Palazzo Mambelli and, to the south, the Bishop’s Palace and Seminary dating from the late 16th century. The tour of the beautiful town ends with a visit to the majestic Palazzo degli Acquaviva (now the town hall), built in stone in the 14th century and remodelled in the 18th century, and the 19th-century municipal theatre, also known as the ‘bomboniera’ for its size (300 seats) and enviable acoustics. From Atri, we descend towards the sea along Provincial Road SP 553 and, after a stop in Silvi, we continue along our route accompanied by the marvellous hilly landscapes bordering the Adriatic Riviera. Arriving on the SS16, we proceed north. Near Pineto we come across the 16th-century Torre di Cerrano, a majestic fortified structure in the shape of a pyramid, built to defend the coast from incursions by Slavs and Saracens. Today, the Tower is a modern Marine Biology Centre and home to the new marine protected area ‘Torre del Cerrano’. Following the Adriatic cycle path, we continue to Roseto degli Abruzzi and return to Villaggio Lido D’Abruzzo.

Very beautiful route. It starts at Villaggio Lido D’Abruzzo, climbs to Montepagano and then, via a few dirt tracks, arrives at Cologna Paese. From the ring road, take the road to the cemetery and continue straight on to Colle Magnone, the hill overlooking the sea.
The panorama and the descent all along dirt tracks and through fields are beautiful.

Starting from Villaggio Lido D’Abruzzo, ride along the Adriatic cycle path, cross the bridge over the Vomano river, turn right and climb up the Vomano on a dirt road between the countryside and the river until you reach the state road at Fontanelle.
Follow the signs for Atri, the road is uphill for about 15 km with a regular gradient. Once in Atri, follow the signs for the Calanchi di Atri nature reserve. The Calanchi di Atri Regional Nature Reserve was established by the Abruzzo Region in 1995 and became a WWF Oasis in 1999. The reserve covers about 380 hectares and stretches from 106 metres at the bottom of the Piomba stream to 433 metres at the visitor centre. The area is home to one of the most fascinating forms of the Adriatic landscape: the calanchi, majestic natural architectures also known as “bolge” or “scrimoni”, originated by a form of dynamic erosion, caused by past deforestation and favoured by the continuous drying and washing away of the clayey soil.

Starting from Villaggio Lido D’Abruzzo, riding along the Adriatic cycle path (except for the interruption on the river Piomba), you arrive in Pescara where you can admire the Carrara marble fountain ‘La Nave’, so named for its shape of an ancient rowing boat (the galea), a work by Pescara sculptor Pietro Cascella. Built in 1986 and donated to the Municipality of Pescara, it was placed at Largo Mediterraneo on the seafront and inaugurated on 4 July 1987. It draws inspiration from the city’s great seafaring tradition, but is also reminiscent of the forced labourers of the Bourbon Baths used as rowers on Spanish ships until 1859. Following this, it is possible to cross the Ponte del Mare (Sea Bridge), which was inaugurated in 2009 with the aim of creating a point of union between the two marinas on either side of the Aterno-Pescara river, with a view to continuity with the Corridoio Verde Adriatico (Green Adriatic Corridor), the cycle path that runs along the Adriatic coast from Ravenna to Santa Maria di Leuca. Designed by the South Tyrolean architect Walter Pichler, at 466 metres long it is currently the largest cable-stayed bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Italy and among the largest in Europe.
The bridge towers over the sea and offers a splendid view of the port of Pescara, the Majella and the Gran Sasso Massif. One cannot fail to be fascinated by the Ponte del Mare
